Is it ok to use JO sounds in JK? If perhaps I just give all the audio people involved in JO/JA credit knowing I'm giving that special someone credit for an audio they created, would that be ok? I know they used some sounds in TODOA from JO/JA but I never know what kinda relations fast gammer has with those producers.

According to some section under some law relating to copyright holders, game companies, and Trade Marked products by producers, it is a very strict policy not to use anything from one game to the other without expressed permission from the copyright holders, seeing as you do not own it.

"BUT I DO! I BOUGHT IT!"
No, you payed for a lease of private use.
"BUT THE ADVERT SAID 'OWN IT TODAY!'!"
Then sue them for false advertisement! No form of any of its contents should be given out free because it would be thought of as giving away the whole game for free. This law is SOOO strict that you can find every piece of every game in every other game, short film/animation, or feature length. Collect them all, and you've been able to turn your Demo into the complete game.

This kind of debate/war has been through Massassi among other forums with mangles, sabers, bazookas and phantom swords. Why should it stop now?

It is not okay to distribute those sounds with your mod.

IANAL, but I see no problem with distributing a mod that was able to reference the sounds from a user's local JO installation somehow.

But the sounds would be in .pk3's in the directory and could not be referenced to the game itself. All I want to know is how were the other mods able to use them, because I know JO sounds when I hear them.

No, but it would not be beyond the wit of a mod developer to write an installation program that was able to rip the sounds from a .pk3, and insert them into a .gob/.goo where they would be referenced.

It's possible that they nauightily redistributed the sound files from JO. It's possible that they found sounds that were so similar that you can't tell the difference that they were allowed to redistribute.

The reason for this is I constructed and textured a shield generator box from JO using the texture from the JO resources. I realize I will have to redraw the textures myself in order to use the model in my mod, but that should be easy cause I have the original. What I wont be able to recreate myself nearly as easily is the sounds affiliated with the powerup in the game. Perhaps I could find similar sounds on Youtube or something. But I just think how cool it would be if I could use JO sounds and other resources(especially textures) as simple as it is to whistling, it would make for some awesome gameplay. But only in a perfect world could I do such a thing. :/

It's against copyright law. Any mod that does do this is subject to immediate removal (this applies to JKHub, Massassi, or anything else).

Thanks Cool Matty, we've got it all figured out.

So this applies to massassi, jkhub, etc. it also appliues to the mods and/or levels held within. so does it mean the JO-esque textures used by EVERY model in JKE is subject to the same points?
And what of the famous mod todoa??

mat file is DC16-ammo.mat is the JA texture display_controls.png file from JA's taspir set. Wall_brushed_sm.mat is wall_brushworn.jpg from JO's nar_hideout set.

But of course, problems pointed to DB for blaitently announcing his attempt to copy over JO sounds and such.

Yes, that's what I've been saying. I've seen many JO/JA stuff used in mods here. Xzero's bryar model uses the bryar texture from JO. And If it applies to sounds shouldn't it apply to models as well?

Yes. I am going to revive this forum page because it pertains to the same subject.

I did a bit of research on the internet but I couldn't really come up with anything so I'll see if anyone here can answer.

Since LucasArts is now no more does this mean we can now use materials from one game to another? I'm still a bit confused on the subject and frankly hope the answer is yes but I just want to make sure.

from what I understand, all of lucas arts leagal documents and stuff ( including the copyright in question) whent to disney in the lucafilm aqusition. Unless you can find an official document from disney stating that these copyrights are no longer valed your answer will still be no. sorry
